Senior Psychological Support for Complex Times

Senior psychological consultancy for complex people and high-pressure organisations

Psychological formulation, specialist support and organisational advisory where health, responsibility, sustained pressure and life context interact.

Mycore Psychological Consulting works with individuals, leaders and organisations carrying significant complexity — where a single diagnosis, symptom, workplace intervention or wellbeing conversation may not explain the whole picture.

The work is calm, formulation-led and professionally governed, with particular attention to capacity, context, psychological load and sound decision-making under pressure.

Discuss Organisational Support

In-person appointments in Chester and remote services across the UK. Organisational consultancy, education and advisory work may also be delivered internationally where appropriate.

Complexity Rarely Arrives One Issue at a Time

A person can be highly capable and still be carrying more than is visible externally.

Health change may coincide with professional responsibility. Menopause with disrupted sleep or neurodivergence. Grief with leadership. Chronic pain with caregiving. Trauma exposure with sustained organisational demand.

For organisations, the same principle applies. Pressure does not exist only within the individual. Workload, role, culture, uncertainty, change, leadership and systems can all influence how much capacity remains available.

Mycore provides a psychologically sophisticated space to understand those interactions before deciding what needs to happen next.

Clarity before intervention. Context before assumption.

Specialist Formulation

When the picture is more complex than the presenting symptom.

A structured consultation exploring how psychological, physiological and contextual influences may be interacting.

Psychological formulation helps organise complexity, clarify what may be maintaining the pattern and identify appropriate next steps.

It is not a medical diagnosis.

Menopause in Context™

Individual Psychological Support

Individual Psychological Support

Menopause does not happen in isolation.

Hormonal transition may interact with sleep, cognition, pain, neurodivergence, trauma history, relationships, caregiving, professional responsibility and cumulative demand.

Menopause in Context™ brings those influences together rather than reducing a woman's experience to hormones alone or to psychology alone.

Individual Psychological Support

Individual Psychological Support

Individual Psychological Support

Senior, discreet psychotherapy for complex periods of life.

Selective individual work is available for people experiencing significant psychological pressure, change, trauma, grief or complex interactions between health and emotional wellbeing.

The emphasis is on careful formulation and appropriately paced therapeutic work rather than a one-size-fits-all protocol.

The Mycore Approach

Understanding what changes when load meets capacity

Mycore's work is increasingly informed by NSCTA™ — Neuro-Somatic Capacity–Threat–Agency, an emerging psychological formulation framework developed by Rebecca Downes.

NSCTA considers how three broad directions of influence may interact:

Body-Up

Physiology, sleep, pain, fatigue, hormones, health, sensory experience and other body-based influences.

Top-Down

Thought, meaning, memory, expectation, attention, beliefs, emotional learning and psychological history.

Outside-In

Work, relationships, caregiving, environment, systems, culture, resources, responsibility and life circumstances.

These influences are considered in relation to three organising dimensions:

Capacity · Threat · Agency

A central proposition within the developing framework is:

When load exceeds available capacity, flexibility can narrow, protection can activate and agency can reduce.

The purpose is not to force complex experience into a single explanation.

It is to develop a more complete formulation of what this particular person or system is carrying, what may be influencing the pattern, and what might need attention next.

NSCTA™ is an evolving psychological formulation framework. It draws upon established psychological, biopsychosocial and stress-science literature while its particular architecture and applications continue to be developed. It is not a medical diagnostic system or an independently validated clinical treatment.

Body-Up is Mycore's adapted terminology. The three-direction organising concept draws on Dr Sarah McKay's Bottom-Up, Outside-In, Top-Down framework.

Areas of Specialist Focus:

Mycore's work is particularly relevant where several sources of psychological or physiological load are interacting.

Complex psychological formulation

Understanding presentations that do not fit neatly into a single explanatory category.

Trauma, grief and cumulative exposure

Including bereavement, secondary trauma, critical incidents and sustained exposure in high-responsibility environments.

Capacity, burnout and high-functioning distress

Understanding the difference between appearing capable and having sufficient sustainable capacity.

Menopause, neurodivergence and changing capacity

Psychological formulation that considers biology alongside cognition, health, work, relationships and life context.

Complex health, pain and invisible illness

Psychologically informed support around FND, fibromyalgia, persistent pain, fatigue and other complex health experiences, alongside appropriate medical care.

Organisational psychological load

Consultancy and support where individual wellbeing interacts with workload, organisational systems, leadership, culture or sustained pressure.

Why Organisations Work with Mycore

Senior psychological access

Work is led by an experienced practitioner rather than passed through a high-volume support pathway.

Formulation before intervention

The aim is to understand what is happening before deciding whether the answer is therapy, leadership support, organisational change, specialist referral, adjustment or another intervention.

Continuity

Retained relationships allow greater understanding of organisational context and reduce the need to begin again each time difficulty arises.

Psychological depth with organisational understanding

Mycore combines clinical experience with an understanding of leadership, workplace systems and high-responsibility professional environments.

Governed, confidential support

Clear professional boundaries, confidentiality and appropriate clinical governance remain central to the work.

Leadership & Psychological Expertise

Rebecca Downes

Rebecca Downes brings together nearly two decades of psychological practice with an earlier career in strategic HR and organisational development.

Since 2008, her work has spanned complex individual practice, organisational psychological support, critical incidents, trauma and bereavement, leadership consultation and psychologically demanding professional environments. She is particularly experienced in working with people who remain highly capable while carrying significant psychological, physiological or occupational load.

Her work is formulation-led, biopsychosocial and non-pathologising. Rather than viewing difficulty through a single diagnosis, symptom or therapeutic model, Rebecca considers the interaction between psychological experience, physiology, health, neurodivergence, relationships, work and the wider systems within which people are trying to function.

Her earlier strategic HR background remains integral to this perspective, bringing an understanding of organisational systems, leadership, culture, responsibility and the conditions under which people are expected to perform.

Rebecca is the developer of NSCTA™ — Neuro-Somatic Capacity–Threat–Agency, a research-informed developing formulation framework for organising complexity and informing professional judgement about what may be appropriate next.

She is also developing Menopause in Context™, reflecting her particular interest in understanding menopause not as an isolated experience, but within the wider neurological, psychological, physiological and contextual picture.

Rebecca’s continuing professional development is increasingly centred on advanced mind–body medicine, stress physiology, neurobiology and complex psychological formulation, including advanced medical CPD through Harvard Medical School. This builds on established specialist training in trauma, EMDR, CBT, neurodivergence, menopause-informed psychological care and other therapeutic modalities.

People make more sense when we understand the context they have been adapting to.
